Travel Diary: Brighton (2-2), 2019

The series called Travel Diary (2019) is a visual travel diary on urban landscapes, and as the name suggests, it is the artist’s autobiographical travel journal, comprising visual excerpts and experiences in different cities. These are cities where TwoSeven has travelled for work, created art, or held exhibitions. There are urban views from Mänttä, Helsinki, Hamburg, Oslo, and Brighton.

TwoSeven highlights places that used to be experienced only by few. Abandoned factory buildings, dark subway tunnels, and night-time railyards belonged to the life sphere of graffiti writers and urban explorers, but for most people, these spaces remain unexperienced and unseen. The landscapes include TwoSeven’s own logo either painted as a natural part of the environment or composed on a surface in the picture, thus breaking the illusion.

TwoSeven’s view is marginal. It is the view of a contemporary artist and graffiti painter; the approach is documentarist and taking over space. Its emotional foundation is dreamy but also slightly melancholic and nostalgic. His own logo is depicted on the side of a brick building in Brighton, the wall of a paper factory in Mänttä, and in the concrete bridge structures in Hamburg – imaginarily.

The pieces are stencilled, black-and-white, photographic paintings seasoned with free and unreserved painterly gestures, splashes, and spillages.
